Conceptual design

To deliver a successful fit-out, we take a holistic approach. From the outset, we undertake a deep investigation into brand, place, and purpose, shaping a clear design narrative that guides every decision. Concept design forms the foundation of the project — the tangible DNA from which all elements evolve.

Preliminary, developed and detailed design

The concept naturally evolves into preliminary design, with drawings that define the overall form and function of the space. Developed design then refines each element through detailed specifications, followed by comprehensive documentation prepared for consents, exemptions, tenders, and approvals.

Throughout the process, Undercurrent coordinates all consultants, suppliers, architects, surveyors, engineers, and contractors, managing specifications and documentation on your behalf. We also work collaboratively through value engineering as required to ensure the project remains aligned with scope, budget, and intent.

Operational design

We believe functional design is fundamental. Workflow efficiency and operational performance are carefully considered across both front- and back-of-house environments. Through detailed planning sessions with owners and operators, we ensure our designs are not only beautiful, but intuitive, ergonomic, and fit for purpose.

Architectural fit-out drawings

We execute full architectural drawing sets in-house to ensure every detail is carefully considered. A typical drawing package may include: a site plan; location plan; specification schedule; proposed plan; furniture plan; set-out plan; floor finishes plan; wall finishes plan; reflected ceiling plan; ceiling finishes; integrated services drawings; interior elevations; shopfront design; bathroom plans and elevations; and detailed joinery plans and elevations. Our drawings are produced in collaboration with project architects, engineers, and other specialist consultants.

3D modelling and artistic visualisations

We provide clients with an interactive 3D model of the space, ensuring the entire project team understands every design detail. Clear communication is central to our process, allowing clients to fully visualise the design before progressing to construction. Rendered visualisations are an essential tool for communicating intent, atmosphere, and detail.

Building consent and exemption submission

We compile and manage all internal and external documentation to support consent and exemption submissions with local councils. We also coordinate and respond to RFIs as required, ensuring a clear and efficient approvals process.

Fit-out observation

During construction, Undercurrent provides fit-out observation services. This may include attending selected site meetings, visiting joinery workshops, and liaising with specialist trades involved in bespoke elements. We observe the works to assess general alignment with the design intent and specifications, and report any observations to the project team for resolution by the relevant parties.

Procurement management

Our network of trusted suppliers is continually evolving as new products and materials emerge. We specify, source, and procure FF&E and OSE items — including fittings, fixtures, appliances, equipment, and furniture — to align with the design intent, agreed budget, and project programme.

Installation design

We are nimble and often work across the boundaries between disciplines. Our installations span event, exhibition, interactive, experiential, and collaborative design. We design and procure installations from concept through to completion.

Styling and set design

Interior styling is often the final layer of a spatial project, whether new or existing. Staging — the considered addition of soft furnishings and personal elements — brings cohesion and a sense of completion to a space.

Our set design services focus on translating design narratives into custom-built sets, typically for photography, editorial, still-life, advertising, and fashion. We place strong emphasis on aesthetic detail, composition, and execution.

Creative Lead and Art Direction

We are focused on big-picture thinking — inspiring new perspectives and challenging convention. We develop ideas that resonate, working as considered problem-solvers alongside our clients and collaborators to shape strategies that can be implemented seamlessly across multiple mediums.
