SCROGGIN

In 2020, Undercurrent was commissioned to design the interior of an exciting new eatery in the heart of Wanaka. Scroggin is an understated café which, as the name alludes, is inspired by the quintessential backcountry hut; a place in the wilderness that allows people to be present and connect more deeply with their food and people around them.

So in our response to the brief, we used touchpoints representative of those you’d find in a classic hut. The repeated use of timber creates an informal environment, while bespoke joinery details create tactility within the neutral material palette. The suspended clothes drying rack, log burner, pioneer red accents and plywood bench seats gently construct a familiar and humble sense of place.
